Search Engines are a collective combination of web servers
and software which are used to search information on the World Wide Web. The World
Wide Web is like a universe of WebPages and to find a particular web page or WebPages
containing particular information is a daunting task. This sophisticated task
is performed by the search engines which eases the task of a user in finding
information. The search engine builds a massive index of web pages collected
with the help of search engine robots. With the help of an algorithm, the engines
sort the index and finds relevant web pages matching the search query. You
would be amazed to hear but it is true that Google serves billions of search
queries per day.
Earlier Search Engines
One of the world’s first search tool was “Archie” created in
the year 1990 by Alan Emtage, Bill Heelan and J.Peter Deutsh .  It provided a mere reference to websites and
did not indexed the contents of the site. After Archie the world’s first webrobotWandex” was launched which ultimately did a fantastic job in crawling
the world wide web. After this, many search engines were launched one after
another like Aliweb, Jumpstation, Lycos, Excite, Infoseek, Inktomi, Altavista,
Yahoo
etc. But, the search engine which won people’s heart was Google. It was
launched in the year 1998 by two Stanford University Graduates Larry Page and
Sergey Brin. Google revolutionized the way people search the web. Larry Page created
an algorithm based on a mathematical formula known as “Pagerank” which ranked
websites according to the popularity of backlinks which linked to them. This
ranking of websites based on relevancy and popularity based on Pagerank started
giving excellent search results. Until now, Google has succeeded in providing
its users with the most relevant search results matching the search query.
How Do Search Engines Work?
Search Engines maintain huge servers for storing large databases
of web index. The web index is maintained with the help of software known as
robots. These robots wander the web and crawl each and every hyperlink present
on the document. Apart from crawlers, search engines have various other software
for sorting and searching results based on the user query. The user enters
search query in the query box and presses enter; then the search engines
presents the user with the most relevant document based on the search query
within the index maintained by the search engines.
