Differences between Seo and Sem

People often get confused between the terms Seo and Sem and take both of them to be the same but actually there are differences between these two terms.

Seo

Seo stands for Search Engine Optimization

Seo gives website organic rankings on search engines

Seo helps to understand the ranking algorithm working for the search engines

Seo does not uses Adwords or other paid methods of advertisement on search engines

Seo results take time to achieve, normally between 3-6 months or more

Seo makes a website popular on the entire World Wide Web by creating references and backlinks

Even if you stop doing Seo, your site may keep its ranking for some days or months depending upon the competition and algorithmic updates

Sem

Sem stands for Search Engine Marketing

Sem gives a website inorganic rankings on search engines
Sem does not feels the need to do so

Sem uses Adwords and other paid methods of advertisement on search engines

Sem can your site ranked soon as it opts for paid advertising.

Sem do not uses the techniques of creating references or backlinks

The moment you stop Sem, your site’s position in Serps are gone. (Leaving the exception that your site is popular and already ranks on search engines)

Google Trends: Compare Keywords

Google Trends allows you to find out the top searches for any country or city of this world. Google Trends gives you an insight about the most popular searches for any country or region at any point of time. It is a great tool for comparing keywords as to how they performed in the past. It can provide you the exact cities and geographical regions where the searches have happened in the past or are happening in present.

How to search on Google Trends?

Searching and comparing keywords on Google trends is easy. You need to enter keywords separated by commas on the query box and Trends will show you the search volume index of the keywords. This data scale shown in the form of a graph is based on the average search traffic of the keywords you have entered. Google Trends sorts the results by region, city and languages.

Date provided by Google Trends
Google Trends generally provides two types of data and these are explained below:-

Hot Trends: - This feature shows you the top 100 searches for the past hour. It gets updated every hour and lets you know what the people are searching for the most.

Search Trends: - This feature allows you to view the search volume graph from the last five years of data. This helps to find out the popular keywords of the past as well as the present. This also helps to study a growth or a fall in the volume of search results.

Working of Rel Canonical Link Element

The Rel Canonical link element solves the duplicate content issues related to a website. It is an HTML attribute directing the search engines about the main or canonical version of the web page. It works well when there are several pages on a website having the same content. In this kind of situation, you can use the rel=”canonical” attribute to guide the search engines as to which page is your main page.

URL Canonicalization

Suppose you are having an eCommerce store selling mugs online. You have provided an option for sorting the mugs via price, color or material. The unfortunate situation is that sorting would use the same group of mugs in the database again and again. Only the urls would change (&sort=price, &sort=color, &sort=material etc) but the content would more or less remain the same. In this situation, we apply the rel=”canonical” tag to prevent all these url’s from correlating with your main product page and direct the search engines to use your main product page as the main canonical page.

Example

<link rel= “canonical” href= “http://www.canonicalexample.com/thisiscanocialurl.php />
In this example given above, the url is the main version of the several duplicate pages in your website.

Local Seo and Citations

Google offers a free business listing for local business on Google local places. This listing helps a user to find a company or services locally within his/her area. This helps to send quality and targeted traffic to the website. People are also able to contact the business immediately with the help of the phone number displayed on the listings. Besides, the listings also shows customer reviews which means it allows the user to check the genuineness of a business and read true reviews from the customer themselves about the services of the company.

How to do Local Seo ?

In order to show your company’s listing on top, you need to read the points mentioned below:-
1-      The business should be local, which means it would get the listing for the city the business is located in.
2-      Create a free local business listing for your business with the help of Google local places.
3-      Add complete address and other information. Verify your business so that it gets listed on Google.
4-      Create a complete profile of your business and add a catchy title keeping the users and the keywords in mind.
5-      Get some citations from local sources. Citations are references to your business from anywhere on the web. Citations may not necessarily contain a link to your website.

That’s all! If you are able to keep your listing complete and up to date with lots of local citations then Google would start loving your listing. Remember genuine customer reviews also plays a crucial factor in this process so you need to spend some time and be patient so that your customers come and write positive reviews about your company. You need to improve the services of your business so that the customers love you and add positive reviews or else negative ones might not look good. Do not try and add fake reviews on your local listing as this can be tracked easily by Google and who knows, you might get penalized for this. Improve your services, get the love of customers and get lots of local citations. Good Luck!

How to do Image Optimization ?

Image Optimization primary deals with reducing the size of the image file so you need to save your image file for the web while creating an image on photoshop. While saving the image, go to the file menu and choose save for the web. If you are finding it difficult to do this way then there are several online tools which could help you in reducing the file size of the image. These tools are provided in the coming sections. While saving the file, give it a proper name. For example, if the image is of a Tiger then keep the name of the file “Tiger” and not “o1”,”w02”,”web1”,”t1” etc. Another thing to remember is to use proper alt text while defining the image. In this example you should use “Tiger” as an alt tag.

<img src="yourimage.gif" alt="Tiger" height="56" width="56" />

Also use proper anchor text while linking to the image.

Advantages of Image Optimization

Image Optimization is necessary as it helps to reduce the loading time of the site and also helps to utilize the available bandwidth. File size reduction helps us to achieve that. It is useful from Seo point of view as sites that load faster are considered better for the user by the searchengines. It also helps the search engine robots to identify the image with the help of the alt tags as the robots are unable to read the image.

Please Note:- Use only proper alt tags and do not spam it.

How to block pages from Search Engines

Many times it happens that you do not want some of your webpages to show on search engines. Well, you can do that easily by guiding the search engine crawlers not to index some of your web pages. There are three ways of doing this as given below:-

First Method:- With the help of Robots.txt

Robots.txt are special files which directs the search engine crawlers not to crawl certain webpages. Example contents:-

User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /banner/
Disallow: /~flower/

This directive disallows the robots from accessing cgi-bin,banner
and flower directories.

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

This directive disallows the robots from accessing the entire
contents from the server.

Second Method:- With the help of Meta Robots tag

Meta Robots tag directs the search engine bots not to index pages with the help of no index attribute. Some examples are given below:-

<meta name=”robots” content=”index,follow”>

This tag directs the search engine robots to index the content and follow the urls of the page.

<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,nofollow”>

This tag directs the search engine robots not to index the content and not to follow the urls of the page.

Third Method:- IP Blocking

Blocks certain IP's from accessing the server. You can create this with the help of an .htacess file.
