How to Set Up a Custom 404 Page with .htacess

A 404 is an error message that is shown when the client browser sends a request to the web server for a file that is not present on the server. 404 error message means the client can successfully communicate with the server but could not find the requested file on the server. This message can distract the users from successfully browsing the site and most of the users end up closing the website. Hence, it becomes important to create a 404 custom error page in order to help the users to navigate across other suitable options present on the site.

404 Error Page (Image credit:- lava360)

A 404 error may display any of the following options:-

Sorry, the page you were looking for in this blog does not exist.

Sorry. The page you’re looking for seems to have gone missing.

Whoops... This page can't be found etc.

A nice solution to this problem is setting up a custom 404 error page with the help of .htaccess file. Firstly, you need to create a custom 404 page which you want to display to your users. Then proceed by following the steps given below:-

Steps

1- Search for .htacess file on the root of your web server. If you are able to find the file then follow step 3 else follow step 2.

2- Open notepad and save the file as .htaccess.

3- Add the following line in it (without changing the existing contents):-

ErrorDocument 404 /yourcustomerrorpage.php

Or

ErrorDocument 404 /yourcustomerrorpage.html

where "yourcustomerrorpage" is the name of the custom page which you want to show instead of the error message.

4- Upload the file on the root of the web server.

Google is testing a new feature of "Quick View" for Wikipedia pages. This feature would enable us to view a lighter version of the Wikipedia pages after we click on a blue button displayed next to the Wikipedia search results displayed related to the search query.

The Quick View button is still in the testing mode and is currently available for Wikipedia pages only. May be in future this would be available for all the websites. It is worth mentioning here that Wikipedia has ready been included in the Google Knowledge Graph and this is the second time it's included in a vital new feature known as Quick View.

Negative SEO- How to Keep Your Site Safe?

Negative Seo happens when your site is promoted negatively on the World Wide Web which results in loss of organic search engine rankings. Negative Seo can be done by your competitors in order to make your site lose its current rankings and instead promote their site higher on the search engines. This can be done by building bad backlinks to your site. These backlinks may come from sources which are considered as bad neighbourhood by Google. Some examples of these niches are casino and xx.

You need to keep an eye upon your backlinks with the help of Google Webmaster Tools and must remove the spammy looking backlinks by using Disavow links tool. The Disavow links tool would discredit those backlinks with your site and keep your site safe on the search engine rankings.

Here is a video from Google's Webspam Head, Matt Cutts explaining about Negative Seo. Have a look at it!

How to Calculate Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI)

Keyword Effectiveness Index or KEI is a measure to find the effectiveness of keywords in the search engines. It is calculated by dividing the total number of webpages with the total number of searches for a particular keyword. One of the primary steps for doing proper search engine optimization is finding keywords that can perform well in the search engines and drive traffic to a website. KEI helps to find the chances of keywords to perform well in the search engines in order to drive traffic to a website. Keywords having a lower KEI gives you a better chance of ranking for those keywords.

Formula for Calculating KEI

The formula for calculating the Keyword Effectiveness Index is as follows:-

KEI = No. of Results / No. of Searches

Example

Let's us there are around 130000 competing webpages for a particular keyword having around 380 searches a month then KEI would be calculated as follows:-

KEI = 130000/380 = 342.10

The lower the KEI, the better your chances of ranking.
The greater the KEI, the lessser your chances of ranking.

The video below will help you in learning more about Keyword Effectiveness Index:-

How to Create Compelling Content That Generates Social Shares and User Love

Content is what everyone is looking for when searching for information on the search engines. Few lucky sites get themselves ranked high and get immense traffic. Huge traffic gives way for conversions and ultimately profits starts to rise. Now the big question arises as to how we can create compelling content that gets the love of the users and ranks high on the search engines making way for traffic and conversions. Here are some tips for creating compelling content for your website.
Create Compelling Content (Image credit:- digett)

Write for Your Audience

Your content must be created keeping in mind your preferred audience. Remember search engines would follow the likes of the users so if you are writing for the users and getting the love of the users then the search engine’s sophisticated algorithm might pick it up and rank your site up. Such is the power of user engagement. Hence, it becomes extremely important to write whole heartedly for the users. It is better to follow the guidelines of Seo copy writing when writing content.

Choose User Friendly Page URL

When your content is ready for publishing then you will have to make choice regarding the url structure. Best way is to opt for a user friendly as well as search engine friendly URL structure. If your content says “guide to seo” then having a file name “guide-to-seo” would work best.

Use H1 and Bold Tags to Highlight Important Points

H1 tags and bold tags helps the search engines to identify the most important parts on a web page. It also helps the user to quickly identify the important points in a web page. This leads to a better user experience and votes your site up in contributing towards search experience optimization.

Use Images (Probably an Infographic or similar kind of image)

Images are loved by users. Content without images are less likely to be shared when compared to content having user friendly images. Informative images compel people to link back to your site or to share your site in the social media channels. This really works and has been proved again and again.

Use Alt Tags

Images with alt tags and title help the user as well as the search engines to correctly identify the contents of the image. The search engines can’t see the content of the image; therefore they rely heavily on alt tags to get an idea about the image. On the other hand, if the image is unable to load due to some reasons, alt text aids the user to identify the possible image that is missing.

Use Videos if Necessary

Having videos in your web pages increases the total time spent by a visitor on your site. If your content demands a video then go ahead and add it on your site. Nowadays, internet speed has increased considerably and videos take a much lesser time to load.

I always prefer a web page having both content with video and not the video alone. Video transcription can come handy if you are finding it difficult to find content to the web page having the video.

Use Social Sharing Widgets

Always provide various ways for social sharing. When people visit a site, they look for social sharing widgets if they find the content presented on your site to be useful. Social sharing widgets eases the task of the user and makes sharing damn easy. Absence of these widgets into every single webpage of your website will make your brand lose some of the vital social shares which otherwise be of so much importance in making your site popular.

Provide Internal Links

Internal linking gives users a chance to find more information related to the main content presented on the web page. Having relevant internal links helps to decrease the bounce rate and aids in proper flow of the Page Rank.

Provide References to Popular Resources

If your webpage has collected information from a variety of sources then it is better to cite those sources at the end of the main content. This would make your page look genuine and more authoritative.

Invite Reader Comments

The best way to increase user engagement in your site is by inviting user comments. Make it easy for the user to comment on your site and encourage communication.

New Google Patent to Determine Spam in Information Collected From a Source

Google has recently filed a patent to handle spam when finding information collected from a source. Google basically extracts data from other sources like superpages, yelp.com, yellowpages.com, whitepages.com, manta.com etc.while ranking web pages with respect to local queries or business related queries. Google maps are returned whenever any business related local query is entered. Information presented on Google maps are collected from a variety of sources besides what is entered by the business itself. This verification helps Google to determine the genuineness of a business and its place of business

Google Map Spam (image credit:- tomicinternetmarketing)

The patent named "Determining Spam in Information Collected From a Source" helps to compare data collected from a variety of sources to check for spam. Some business owners try to manipulate their local business results by adding words such as "cheap", "discount", "best" etc. in the main title of the business which correctly identifies the business name. Now, this techniques would not help any more to rank their business higher up on the search results. Proper business names must be entered under the main name of the business to remain safe from any kind of Google penalty that may be applied if Google identifies that your business is using spammy ways to manipulate its search results.

Here are some important pieces of information contained in the patent:-

Full Patent information can be viewed here:-

How to Write a Google Reconsideration Request?

Webmasters may feel the need to submit a site reconsideration request to Google if they have violated the Google Webmaster Guidelines in some way or the other.

Writing a Google Reconsideration Request (Image credit:- itechdestiny)

What is a Reconsideration Request?

Reconsideration request is an email that is sent to Google via Google Webmaster Tools explaining about the faulty techniques used by the webmaster to increase the search engine rankings of their website and a promise that it won't happen in future.

When Should We Send a Reconsideration Request?

Whenever the site loses its presence on Google then it becomes necessary for the webmaster to send a reconsideration request to Google in order to get the site back.

What Should be Included in a Reconsideration Request?

You must include all the details of the spammy tactics that you have used in order to influence the search engine rankings. You must tell how these tactics violated the Google guidelines? specifying the sources included in your spammy work. Some of the example are cloaking, paid links, bad neighbourhood, malware etc. You must convince Google that you have corrected the issues that caused the penalty and it won't happen in future.

Have a look at this video from Matt Cutts in order to have a better explanation of the things to include in a reconsideration request.
