Working of Rel Canonical Link Element

The Rel Canonical link element solves the duplicate content issues related to a website. It is an HTML attribute directing the search engines about the main or canonical version of the web page. It works well when there are several pages on a website having the same content. In this kind of situation, you can use the rel=”canonical” attribute to guide the search engines as to which page is your main page.

URL Canonicalization

Suppose you are having an eCommerce store selling mugs online. You have provided an option for sorting the mugs via price, color or material. The unfortunate situation is that sorting would use the same group of mugs in the database again and again. Only the urls would change (&sort=price, &sort=color, &sort=material etc) but the content would more or less remain the same. In this situation, we apply the rel=”canonical” tag to prevent all these url’s from correlating with your main product page and direct the search engines to use your main product page as the main canonical page.

In this example given above, the url is the main version of the several duplicate pages in your website.

Google offers a free business listing for local business on Google local places. This listing helps a user to find a company or services locally within his/her area. Image Optimization primary deals with reducing the size of the image file so you need to save your image file for the web while creating an image on photoshop. While saving the image, go to the file menu and choose save for the web. If you are finding it difficult to do this way then there are several online tools which could help you in reducing the file size of the image. These tools are provided in the coming sections. While saving the file, give it a proper name. For example, if the image is of a Tiger then keep the name of the file “Tiger” and not “o1”,”w02”,”web1”,”t1” etc. Another thing to remember is to use proper alt text while defining the image. In this example you should use “Tiger” as an alt tag.

How to block pages from Search Engines

Many times it happens that you do not want some of your webpages to show on search engines. Well, you can do that easily by guiding the search engine crawlers not to index some of your web pages. There are three ways of doing this as given below:-

First Method:- With the help of Robots.txt

Robots.txt are special files which directs the search engine crawlers not to crawl certain webpages. Example contents:-

User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /banner/
Disallow: /~flower/
This directive disallows the robots from accessing cgi-bin,banner 
and flower directories.
User-agent: *
Disallow: /
This directive disallows the robots from accessing the entire 
contents from the server.

Second Method:- With the help of Meta Robots tag

Meta Robots tag directs the search engine bots not to index pages with the help of no index attribute. Some examples are given below:-

<meta name=”robots” content=”index,follow”>

This tag directs the search engine robots to index the content and follow the urls of the page.

<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,nofollow”>

This tag directs the search engine robots not to index the content and not to follow the urls of the page.

Third Method:- IP Blocking

Blocks certain IP's from accessing the server. You can create this with the help of an .htacess file.

Microsoft's New Social Networking Site- pronounced "Social" is a new social networking site, infact  an experimental research project developed by FUSE labs of Microsoft. It is based on the concept of Collage. How to do Competitor Analysis
