Using synonyms have always been a good strategy for the search engine optimizers to rank for the terms that have a similar meaning. Having synonyms related to your main keyword would help the search engines understand your web page well and help it to rank well on the search engines with terms that are related to the main keyword.

Here is a video from Matt Cutts explaining how to incorporate synonyms for important terms in your site. Matt says, if your site is targeting two keywords- EMR (Electronic Medical Records) and EHR (Electronic Health Records, then its better to include both the keywords in the content of your webpage in a natural way in order to stop the search engines from guessing the relativity of both the keywords. This would give your site enough weight to rank for both of these keywords.
