Google Says, Pages Offering Bad Mobile User Experience Will Not Rank Highly After Jan 10, 2017

Google has clearly indicated in one of it's recent blog posts that webpages where content is not easily accessible to the user when searching from mobile devices will not rank as highly after Jan 10th, 2017.

What Hampers the Mobile User Experience?

Popup's that cover the main content area and not allow the user to view it.

Displaying interstitials that needs to be closed in order to access the main content area.

However, not all interstitials are bad. Some that inform the user about cookie usage or a popup for age verification or a popup that does not covers the entire mobile screen are all valid usage of popups that won't be affected by the coming January update.

The main point that matters is, users should reach your main content from search and there should be no mandatory obstructions to it.

5 Ways to Properly Optimize Your Landing Pages for SEO

A landing page is one of the most important parts of the entire SEO campaign, yet many marketers still avoid optimizing it. A perfectly optimized landing page is essential for increasing the overall conversions happening on the site. SEO friendly landing page caters to the audience and provides them with everything from ease of navigation to quality information.

Laid down below are the steps, which you need to follow to enhance the SEO appeal of landing page for your audience:

1- Follow the Rule of "Thirds" to Make Your Landing Pages More Interesting, Dynamic and UX Friendly

As per the international standard on Ergonomics of human-system interaction, the user experience is defined as “a person’s perceptions and responses that result from the use or anticipated use of a product, system or service.” On general terms, I recommend you to follow the below guidelines for an effective, user-friendly design:

• You can use content management software such as WordPress. It offers highly customizable free WordPress themes and can be powered up using extra plug-in like Visual Composer, WordPress  SEO, Link Patrol, SEO Quake, Broken link checker etc. All these plugins can be used to improve the  search engine rankings of your blog. Moreover, for a stunning fast speed, you can implement WPEngine (click here to learn more).

• Follow a minimalist, mobile first approach with typography matching the brand image.

• The content should be tailored to consumer’s behaviors and tastes.

• Keep touch targets to 48 x 48 pixels and have an easy navigation for the users.

To make your landing pages more user-friendly, design them by following the rule of thirds.

  What is Rule of thirds?

• Rule of thirds employs “3 by 3” grid structures or 9 even squares to highlight the prominent aspects,   which get noticed first.

• The most prominent pattern followed by eye to view a landing page is either “F” or “Z.”

• Rule of thirds cashes in on these patterns to appeal to online audience take note of fascinating features of a landing page and easily spot the information they would be interested in.

Every online user who lands up on your page can provide you with significant benefits. Use Rule of thirds to evoke user curiosity as you might not know how much value a single visitor can bring into your website by spreading the word or by availing services. Two important aspects, which a web designer needs to ponder upon while designing a landing page with rule of thirds, are:

• What are the points of interest from the visitor's perspective?

• What content should be placed in these points of interests to appeal to a visitor?

Check out landing page of WebDAM for consideration, which depicts the percentage of attention, each point of interest gets:

The approach in this case of the designer is simple. Instead of putting details in the center, the page layout effectively breaks down the points of interest to place the appropriate information on each grid. The result is a much more dynamic and appealing landing page.

2- Add Your Main Keyword on "Famous 5 Spots"

The “famous 5 Spots” for keyword inclusion that gets a landing page noticed by search engine and provide easy information to the users are:

A. URL of the Page

Add keywords to the website address of a page such as Avoid using catchy phrases rather go for appropriate and relevant keywords to be added up in the URL. It should accurately define and tell the search engine as well as the audience what sort of information to expect.

B. Title of the Page

The impact of adding effective keywords to a title is directly proportional to the CTR and your search engine rankings. Follow the below guidelines for keyword inclusion in the title tag:

• Create descriptive page titles having at least one different word that attracts the user.

• Try and start the title with your main targeted keyword.

• Avoid repeated or boilerplate titles.

• Do not use your brand name in every title. It hampers the user experience.

• Keep the titles between 50-60 characters. The lesser words you have in the title, the more importance every word receives.

• Include acronyms and numbers.

C. H1 Tag

The heading should be prompt to appeal to the online users. It should evoke a sense of curiosity for the viewers to access the information in the respective landing page. Try the following tips to optimize your H1 tag perfectly:

• Your main keyword should be the H1 tag of the page.

• Also, Include synonyms of the main keyword to increase the relevancy further.

• Avoid creating lengthy H1 tags as it dilutes the primary keyword value.

D. Alt Tag

Alt tag provides an insight into the image for the readers. Alt tag and alt texts can be added to an image tag in the HTML.  An image tag code may look like:

<img class=”alignCenter shadow” src=”allhelpserviceslogo.jpg” alt=”image-description” title=”image tooltip”/>

Alt tag tells the search engine what the image is all about and in a case due to a technical fault the image does not get load the alt tag provides information about the image content.

Make sure to use your keyword in a natural manner in the alt tag. For example, if your keyword is “chocolate cake recipe” then add an alt tag to the image of the chocolate cake as “chocolate cake.”

This will increase the overall relevancy of the web page and help it to rank higher in the search results. But remember not to use irrelevant keywords that do not correspond with the provided images. This will get counted as keyword stuffing, and your site might get penalized for that.

E. First sentence of the main paragraph

Add keywords within the very first few lines of the content. A good landing page enhances the CTR by evoking the interests of viewers. This keeps them interested in the information and helps them find relevant information to their query.

Keyword inclusion is determining the factor for Google algorithm to rank your landing page amongst top search results. Ensure that you are using these keywords in a natural manner. You can use keywords in multiple locations just don’t over do the practice as it might affect your search engine rankings.

3- Create AMP HTML Landing Pages for Organic Goals and AMP AD Landing Pages for Campaign Goals

There are two specific landing pages that we create to generate conversions. First page for conversion of organic goals and second page for conversion of ad campaigns. AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) is an initiative by Google to allow faster loading of landing pages on mobile devices both for ads and organic results. One of the newer variation of the AMP Ad landing pages.

AMP ad landing pages work in the following ways:

• Ads leading to ALPs (Ad Landing Pages) have a pre-connection with the landing page. It significantly reduces time by eliminating the time wasted in issuing a pre-request to land up a user on the landing page.

• Even before a user clicks on the ad prefetch landing images are already requested and downloaded before a user even clicks on the Ad.

• There are no redirects to the ad server. The request is initiated when the user reaches a landing page. It is compatible with an amp-pixel component for 3rd party tracking.

AMP Ad pages are effective for a reason that:

• The user is more inclined to click on an ad, which they find trustworthy and know, will provide a positive experience.

• It is highly benefiting for advertisers who can cash in on user engagement, which boosts conversion rates.

AMP HTML and AD landing pages add to the overall appeal and can leave a positive imprint on the psyche of your audience. An online user impressed with the functioning will only come back to boost conversion as well as retention rate.

So, as a Webmaster, you need to create a separate variation of AMP HTML (organic pages) and then AMP AD Pages (for every separate campaign landing page). This will help your landing pages to remain optimized for higher conversions.

4- Be "Very Clear" with Your Message, Use Hero Images and Provide all Information that the User "Might" Research before Conversion

Be clear with the objective of a landing page i.e. what its purpose is and what you want to achieve with it? Everything matters around providing the best experience to the user. The message on your landing page should be in align with your marketing goals. Make it easier for the visitor to read and understand your message. Focus around topics instead of just keywords. Make use of topical SEO (click here to learn more) that focusses on creating pages around topics in place of keywords .

Make use of search query option under Google Analytics to identify the searches that are leading to the specific landing pages. Further, optimize the pages as per the search query identified by the user.

The best-converting landing pages have hero images in them with a single H1 containing the brand message and large yet clear CTA buttons that guide the user to take immediate action.

Have a look at the below image of VerticalResponse that displays a hero image with easily distinguishable CTA buttons.

5- Leverage Mouse Tracking, Eye Tracking and Keep CTA in the Most Desirable Spot

Mouse tracking and Eye tracking are parts of heat map generated by evaluating the navigation patterns of your audience. What appeals most to the eyes of an online visitor once they land up on your page? The data is represented in the form of heat map as shown below in the screenshot. The areas colored Red are the prominent areas, which attract majority clicks while greener the shade less, is its appeal.

• Eye Tracking

This is achieved by taking in account the eye moments of sample audience who browse throughout landing pages. This activity is highly effective in providing data regarding how an online user behaves once they land up on your web page. This might be a bit expensive as the sample audience, and professional monitoring comes at a cost.

• Mouse Tracking

Mouse tracking monitors mouse movements and clicks. It is the best way to get hold of most appealing features of your landing page. What appeals to your customers and what not can help you work design a proficient landing page for enhancing the conversion rate of your website. The best part is that they come directly from your online visitors.

• Position of CTA

The objective of a landing page is concluded in the Call-To-Action buttons. They are the most important part of a PPC campaign. With data accumulated from heat maps, you can conveniently decide the place to put CTA button. Make it easy to spot with a defined set of instruction.

The traits of an ideal CTA button on a landing page are:

Appealing and easy to spot visual.

Ability to direct with message.

Bigger and bolder than other buttons.

Use of action oriented words.

Whenever an online visitor lands up on your page, it is the landing pages that should do the talking. You can design an effective landing page to boost the conversion rate by taking in account the ways mentioned above.

Your Digital Marketing Budget is Getting Wasted! How to Stop it?

A substantial share of digital company revenue is put to marketing. Digital marketing is no longer a part of the digital structure rather the main driving force to generate profitable growth. Issues start to incur when the marketing strategy in place does not provide expected results due to one reason or another.

Here in this article we will talk about how from renowned to small start-ups tend to waste a chunk of their digital marketing budget and how to fix those mistakes to maintain a steady growth of an organization.

First, let’s talk about ways by which knowingly or unknowingly digital marketing budget goes to waste:

1- Missing the Bigger Picture

A marketing campaign should not be planned with a narrow vision. It should take your organization to next step of your aspirations. Allotting budget to a marketing campaign with no future ambitions only takes you back to square one.

Short term marketing goals with no future adversely impacts the overall branding on the digital platform. Spend your resources to keep the targeted audience engaged to enhance the retention and conversion rate. Planning is an important facet of any marketing strategy. Your planning might come back to haunt you by putting the allotted budget to waste if:

  • Your marketing strategy does not take in market requirements.
  • You have set unrealistic goals with no concrete strategy.
  • You implement your strategy without realizing your precise goals.
  • You implement the tactics of days gone by.

2- Ineffective Strategies and Use of Black Hat Tactics

Many are guilty of adopting illegitimate means to rank high on search engine results. Google strictly bans such practices. It does not matter how effective or beneficial black hat tactics are for your online business. Even if you are unknowingly guilty of employing black hat tactics search engine will implicate with appropriate regulations which can range from penalty to even website being removed from the server.

One way or the other Google will detect such practices and the consequences can set your digital enterprise back. Most prominent tactics which Google discourages online websites to spend on are:

The time and money you spent on indulging in such ineffective strategy only eats up into your marketing campaign. Better to spend on quality than to try fool search engine by paying for manipulative services.

3- Unable to Recycle Leads

It is the loyal customers who drive a digital platform to success. If your marketing strategy does not cater to retain them then you are wasting your marketing budget. It leads to decline in retention rate and negatively impact the conversion rate of a marketing campaign as well. Even a callous approach of appealing to your loyal customers can result in failure of your marketing campaign.

  • Unable to recycle leads can be deemed as a by-product of:
  • Ineffective marketing strategy.
  • Poor customer satisfaction.
  • Poor market evaluation.
  • Unable to understand the importance of steady retention rate.

The most common mistake is to give up after initial tries. Online audience needs to be wooed on constant basis. Once you loose sight of your loyal customers the budget spent on new strategy is only going to be much higher than you can anticipate.

4- Inadequate Promotions

Promotion on digital platform requires proficient skills. Some might be calculative in their approach yet lack that creative touch to appeal to the right audience. As SEO Services USA rightly suggests in their blog, "A website should have high quality content, proper and user friendly navigation structure, appropriate keywords in proper places, place for the users to comment in the blog are all required in order to drive potential traffic". Promoting a brand on digital platform has to be done with precise aim and aspirations. A concrete market analysis report needs to be acquired regarding the appropriate channels and targeted audiences before you even start to pen down a strategy. Inadequate promotions not necessarily means cost cutting. It can be result of promoting on several channels with no sight of productive platforms.

If you think paying a hefty amount to a single source for promotion is better than productive means such as feasible means like e-mail marketing or ad campaigns you are loosing out on your targeted audience and wasting budget which otherwise can be put to other marketing gains.

5- Loosing Sight of SEO Objective

SEO is an ever-changing concept but has defined and precise branches to reap rewards for any digital platform. Spending in bits and pieces on optimization is not the right the right way as it directly affects the SEO objective.

The two main components of SEO are On-page optimization and Off-page optimization. Both go hand in hand and have to be used in correlation to garner decent enough exposure for a marketing strategy.

These are divided into three major components which further down form a network of strategies to be used for the benefit of any digital marketing campaign. These three components are:

  • First is the Content Development.
  • Second is the technical aspect of optimizing the content to be ranked in search engine results.
  • The third is to make it available to targeted audience by optimizing the reach.

Loosing sight of SEO objective can be great folly on part of any digital enterprise who aspires to implement an effective marketing campaign.

Now that you know which mistakes you should way of here is how you can address the same issues.

How to fix it?

1- Track Your ROI

Track ROI to evaluate the productivity of your marketing campaign. This is what sets apart great marketers from the good marketers. The data which you accumulate with ROI will help you strategize better for future digital marketing campaigns.

Before getting started with evaluating ROI it is essential to look at Key Performance Indicators. KPI are the goals or objectives of Digital marketing campaign. The performance indicators involved in KPI are mentioned below:

  • What is the objective of your marketing campaign? Is it to attract traffic, generate lead or enhance reach?
  • Which channel you are looking to evaluate ROI from? Is it website, blog, social network or search engine?
  • Source based performance i.e. do you want to measure ROI for direct traffic, organic search, e-mails or PPC?
  • Campaign based performance i.e. Lead generation, click through, conversions or conversion rates?

Once you have finalized the key performance indicator to measure ROI next is to make use of available tools such as Google Analytics or Kissmetrics to get hold of data.

2- Market Before You Build Products

Digital marketing is an effective tool to garner adequate audience response for a product. Do not go about building your product before getting feel of market excitement. One way to market your product before you build it is to design marketing strategy to offer monetary benefits in the form of deals or discounts to consumers.

How to market your products before you build it?

The first step in this regard is to identify the niche audience. Once you do that it is time to:

  • Run marketing campaigns such as Ad campaigns or use e-mail marketing to get audience feedback.
  • Promote a shareable content on social media channels to spread the word.
  • Generate curiosity by creating demand and supply factor.

Before committing to provide services on digital platform it is necessary to get audience perception regarding what you are marketing. Do not waste your marketing budget without knowing the relevance and productivity factor of the services.

3- Integrate Different Business Functions

A digital marketing campaign can benefit from the assistance of different business functions. IT professionals for example are great addition to evaluate the productivity of marketing goals. A comprehensive digital planning and strategy can be put in place with the assistance of IT professionals. Divide your marketing strategy into smaller parts and see how you can make use of other business functions for better gains. Identify like minded professionals in other sections of business arena. Discuss their concerns and address their suggestions which can be implemented in Digital marketing campaign.

Cut down on expenses by aligning with like minded professionals. Instead of outsourcing or paying for services, look to integrate other business functions into your existing digital marketing strategy.

4- Revise & Reinvent

Digital marketing campaigns see changes on regular intervals. What works for one probably wont work for others or the money which your rivals spend might be much less than what you are spending. You can take assistance from following to boost productivity of your marketing strategy:

Do not keep repeating your strategy. Form time to time evaluate market requirements and what your niche audience is looking for and accordingly channel your digital marketing budget to attract them.

Follow the above mentioned information to keep your marketing strategy on right track. Whatever you save by not wasting on digital marketing mistakes can be put to other investments to fuel the growth of your digital enterprise. Be smart and try not commit any of the above mentioned mistakes.

Google Rank-Modifying Spammers Patent

Your chances of attracting audience on online platform are completely dependent on how high you rank on search engine results. Needless to say, when the arena is as vast as a World Wide Web there are going to be illicit practices being incorporated.

The Rank-Modifying Spammers Patent highlights all of those spam tricks being incorporated to rank a page higher on search engine results. To give you an idea of how Rank modifying techniques affect search engine results here is an example:

The first half of the figure points out to the ranks of search engine results minus any rank modifying spamming. However, with rank modifying spamming you can see a great shift in the ranking pages. The websites which rank much lower in result pages climb higher and garner audience for their benefit.
Techniques used by Rank Modifying Spammers:

Google uses an intricate form of codes for the algorithm it has in place to weed out spam activities. Time and again spammers come with some creative ideas to better SERP rankings. These spam activities only impact the efficiency of a search engine.

Some of the most prevalent Rank modifying tricks used by spammers include:

1.    Keyword stuffing

Over stuffing of keywords is done to make the content look more relevant to the information a user is searching for on search engine.

2.    Invisible text & Tiny text

Invisible text refers to the keywords which have same color as that of the background of the page. Invisible text enhances the frequency of the keywords without being visible. Tiny text is the implementation of keywords in very small text within a page.

Invisible and Tiny text might even point to a completely irrelevant page which does not carry any information for the benefit of the user.

3.    Page redirects

For Page Redirects spammers use a coded first page which redirects a user to completely irrelevant second page. The page automatically redirects the user to the second page only employing a coded page to bluff the Google algorithm.

4.    META tags stuffing

META tag stuffing refers to adding of large set of keywords in the META tags on a page. These keywords generally have got nothing to do with the actual content of the page. The purpose of META tags stuffing works for the reason that spammers are able to attract a large set of audience to the page who probably search with a different set of keywords altogether.

What is Rank Modifying Spammer Patent?

The Patent states that:

A system determines a first rank associated with a document and determines a second rank associated with the document, where the second rank is different from the first rank. The system also changes, during a transition period that occurs during a transition from the first rank to the second rank, a transition rank associated with the document based on a rank transition function that varies the transition rank over time without any change in ranking factors associated with the document.”

Let’s take an example to get a better understanding of the whole concept:

Consider two documents which are ranked first and second on the search engine results. Now, the second ranked document is a genuine document which is completely relevant to the information a user is trying to search for. However, with all the Rank modifying tricks the spammer has been able to rank his document ahead of the more genuine one.

The method analyzes the rankings of both the document. How both the pages are ranked and the difference in accordance with the relevancy of the information searched and provided.

Google has clearly laid out the webmaster guidelines for everyone to take note of. This algorithm with it latest modification does it all in real time and accordingly implicates the spammers. Google wants to create a user friendly search engine and accordingly makes changes to its algorithm to make sure that all those spam activities are dealt with productivity.

During all this there is a transition where in the result will be completely different from what a spammer can expect. The page which was ranked first with all the spamming tricks either might go down few places or may drastically go down to bottom places. This only invokes a reaction from spammers who might try to get rid of those spam links and in the process invite a Google penalty.

A Google penalty might even result in blacklisting of a webpage who indulge in Rank modifying spam tricks time and again along with other illicit activities to rank a page higher on search engine results.

The ranking transition function serves as a highly tool to evaluate rank modifying techniques employed by spammers. It gives confusing reactions to rank modifying spam activities and can impact rankings to a great extent.

Google for one makes sure that these spam techniques are detected in nick of time and users are provided with appropriate information.
